Local SEO for plumbers
Local SEO for plumbers: be the first call when a pipe bursts
When a pipe bursts or a drain backs up, the customer grabs a phone, searches, and calls one of the three plumbers Google shows on the map. To be one of them, you need the right Google Business Profile category, hours that match when someone answers your phone, a page for every service, and a steady stream of recent reviews. Here's how that works for a plumbing company.

On Google

- plumber open now
- water heater repair near me
- tankless water heater installation [city]

To ChatGPT, Google's AI and Perplexity
- Who's a reliable plumber near me who can come out today?
- How much does it cost to replace a 50-gallon water heater?
- Is a tankless water heater worth it for a family of four?
- What should I do while I wait for an emergency plumber?
The free audit checks your Google Maps rank for your main search from 25 points around your business, and asks the AI assistants about it too.
Plumbing customers search in two very different moods
A plumbing customer is either in trouble right now or planning a job. The emergency searcher types 'plumber open now' with water on the floor and calls a business from the map pack, the three listings Google shows on a map above the regular results. The planner searching 'tankless water heater installation' reads a few websites first.
| Search | What the customer wants | What wins the call |
|---|---|---|
| 'plumber open now' | Someone who answers tonight | Hours that are true, a person on the phone, recent reviews |
| 'water heater repair near me' | Hot water back today at a fair price | A water heater page, real install photos, reviews that mention water heaters |
| 'sewer line replacement [city]' | Confidence before a big bill | A sewer page that explains camera inspection and repair options |
Your map ranking decides whether the emergency caller ever sees you. Your website decides whether the planner picks you over the next tab.
Set up your Google profile the way plumbers get found
Your Google Business Profile is the free listing that appears on Google Maps and in the map pack. In Whitespark's 2026 ranking factors survey, the primary category is the top map pack factor and being open at the time of the search is fifth, so start there.
- Primary category: Plumber. Add more only for work you really do, such as Drainage service, Septic system service or Gas installation service. Google's guidelines ask you to use as few categories as possible.
- Hours you actually answer. List 24 hours only if a person picks up at 2 a.m.
- A hidden address if customers don't come to you. Google asks service-area businesses to hide it and keep the service area within about 2 hours' drive.
- Your real business name. Adding 'Emergency Plumbing 24/7' to the name breaks Google's name rules. We never do it.
On a managed profile, we keep all of this current and reply to every review within 24 hours.
Ranking only pays if someone answers the phone
Emergency plumbing is a phone business, and missed calls are where rankings leak. In Invoca's home services call benchmarks, only 52% of callers reached a person, and 55% of businesses never asked the caller to book. A top-3 map spot at 7 p.m. is worth nothing if the call rolls to voicemail.
- Put a tap-to-call number at the top of every page, identical to the one on your Google profile.
- Say 'emergency' or '24/7' only where it's true.
- Reply to reviews that mention response time, good and bad, so the next caller sees you take it seriously.
What you get from us each week
A scan of 25 points around your business for searches like 'emergency plumber' and 'water heater repair', a plain-English update, and an alert if a competitor jumps ahead or starts collecting reviews fast.
Give every plumbing service its own page
A dedicated page for each service is the top local organic ranking factor in the same Whitespark survey. One 'Services' page with twelve bullet points can't rank for water heaters and sewer lines at the same time.
Each page should answer what a homeowner wants to know before calling: what the job involves, how long it takes, what affects the price, with real photos. A water heater page can explain tank versus tankless; a sewer page, camera inspections and trenchless repair if you offer it.
City pages are where plumbers get into trouble. Google treats near-identical town pages as doorway abuse, so we build an area page only when there's something true and specific to say, like jobs done there or the age of the local housing. Every plan includes a new website built this way.
Reviews and AI answers that name your work
The reviews that help a plumber describe the job: the burst pipe fixed at night, the water heater swapped the same day, the tech who wore shoe covers. You can't script reviews, but you can ask every customer right after the job, while the relief is fresh.
AI assistants are the newer front door. When someone asks ChatGPT which plumber near them can come today, your best chance of being named is a website, Google profile and reviews that say clearly what you do and where. That's the work of AI search optimization, including a monthly check of whether assistants mention or cite you.

The Top-3 Promise
No monthly fee until you're in the top 3.
On the Partnership plan you pay $0 a month until your business is in Google's top 3 on the map in 5 of the 25 squares around it, confirmed on two scans at least 48 hours apart. We take one plumber in each service area, so we never work for the business down the road. How the Top-3 Promise works.
Questions plumbers ask
How long does it take a plumber to rank higher on Google Maps?
There's no honest fixed timeline. It depends on how many plumbers compete near you, how strong their reviews are and where your profile starts. The free audit shows your starting point on a 25-point map grid in a few minutes. On the Partnership plan, the Top-3 Promise means you pay no monthly fee until you reach the agreed top-3 target.
Should I run Local Services Ads or invest in local SEO?
Plumbing is a Local Services Ads category, where you pay per lead and appear above the map. Google began moving these ads into Google Ads in August 2026, starting with categories such as plumbing, and you still pay per lead. Ads stop the day the budget does, while rankings and reviews keep bringing calls, so the two work well together.
Can I show up in towns where I don't have an office?
Yes, within limits. Distance from the searcher is one of the strongest map factors, so you'll rank most easily near where your business is based. Set your service area to the towns you really cover, within Google's guideline of about 2 hours' drive, and build area pages only where you have real jobs and details to show.
Will you work with another plumber in my area?
No. GrowLevel works with one business per trade in each service area, so we never help the plumber competing with you for the same calls.
Guides
- GuideHow to rank in the Google Maps 3-pack (2026)Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance, distance and prominence, and that there's no way to pay for a better local ranking. You can't move closer to every customer, so you rank higher on Google Maps by winning on what you control: the most specific primary category, a verified and complete profile, a steady flow of real reviews, accurate hours and a website with a page for each service. Then you track your rank on a grid, because it changes from one neighborhood to the next.
- GuideLocal Services Ads vs local SEO: which one do you need? (2026)Local Services Ads are Google ads you pay for per lead, not per click: you're charged when a customer calls, messages or books through the ad, and businesses that pass Google's screening get the Google Verified badge, which replaced Google Guaranteed and Google Screened. Local SEO earns your place in the free map pack and the regular results below it, which Google says you can't pay for. Ads bring leads for as long as you fund them, and SEO builds leads that keep coming, so the two work best together.
- GuideHow long does local SEO take? An honest answer (2026)There's no honest fixed timeline for local SEO. How long it takes depends on where you start, how strong the top 3 near you are, which phrase you want, where your customers search from, and how far behind you are on reviews. Profile fixes can be made in days, while closing a reviews gap and building a reputation across the web take longer, so track progress with weekly grid scans rather than one ranking number.
