What this check shows you
25 search points
A 5 by 5 grid centered on your business, up to 5 miles out, searched the way a customer standing there would.
Your rank at each point
Green for the top 3, yellow for 4 to 10, orange for 11 to 20, gray where you don't show up in the first 20.
Who's ahead of you
The businesses Google shows first at the center of your map, with their ratings and reviews.
Your target
How many squares you're in the top 3 today, and the target for the Top-3 Promise.
Why a single ranking number is misleading
Distance is one of the three things Google says it uses to rank local results, along with relevance and prominence. Someone searching from your street sees a different map from someone two miles away. A checker that searches from one spot, usually your own address, shows you at your best and hides the neighborhoods where you're invisible.
A grid shows the real picture: the squares where you're in the top 3, the ones where customers scroll past three competitors first, and the ones where you don't appear at all.
How to read your grid
- Green near the center, red at the edges is the usual pattern. Your profile is relevant, but you aren't prominent enough to reach farther out.
- Gray or orange even at the center usually means a relevance problem: the wrong primary category, a thin profile or missing service pages.
- Strong on one side only often follows a competitor with a stronger profile, or a road or river people don't cross for your service.
Whatever the pattern, the next steps are in how to rank in the Google Maps 3-pack.
Tracking it every week
The free audit is a snapshot. Our clients get the same grid scanned every week, saved with its raw results, so they can watch squares turn green. On the Partnership plan, that grid decides when billing starts: 5 of 25 squares in the top 3, confirmed on two scans at least 48 hours apart. The full method is on How we measure.
Questions owners ask
Is the Google Maps rank checker free?
Yes. The grid check is part of the free audit, and the report is ready in minutes.
How far out does the grid go?
The free audit checks up to 5 miles from your business. For clients we agree the radius based on how dense the area is: 2 to 3 miles in a dense city, 5 miles in a suburb and up to 10 miles in a rural area.
Why is my rank different on my own phone?
Google personalizes results by where you're standing, and often by what you've searched before. A grid scan searches from fixed points the same way every time, so it shows changes you can trust.
What's a good result?
The top 3 in the squares where most of your customers live. Most people call one of the first three businesses on the map.

Guides
- GuideHow to rank in the Google Maps 3-pack (2026)Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance, distance and prominence, and that there's no way to pay for a better local ranking. You can't move closer to every customer, so you rank higher on Google Maps by winning on what you control: the most specific primary category, a verified and complete profile, a steady flow of real reviews, accurate hours and a website with a page for each service. Then you track your rank on a grid, because it changes from one neighborhood to the next.
- GuideWhy is my business not showing on Google Maps? 9 causes and how to fix eachIf your business doesn't show on Google Maps even when you search its exact name, the profile itself has a problem: it isn't verified yet, it's suspended, it's marked as a duplicate, or a recent edit is still under review. If it shows for your name but not for searches like "plumber near me", it's a ranking problem: the wrong primary category, a searcher who's too far away, or competitors with more reviews. The 60-second name test below tells you which one you have.
- GuideHow long does local SEO take? An honest answer (2026)There's no honest fixed timeline for local SEO. How long it takes depends on where you start, how strong the top 3 near you are, which phrase you want, where your customers search from, and how far behind you are on reviews. Profile fixes can be made in days, while closing a reviews gap and building a reputation across the web take longer, so track progress with weekly grid scans rather than one ranking number.
