What this check shows you
Five assistants
ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Gemini, asked about your main service and area.
Mentioned
Whether the assistant named your business in its answer.
Cited
Whether it used your website as a source, which is how assistants decide what to trust.
Cited instead
The sites it relied on instead, so you know where your facts need to show up.
Why AI answers matter for a local business
Customers increasingly ask an assistant "who's the best plumber near me" instead of scrolling a list. BrightLocal's 2026 consumer research found 45% of US consumers had used AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier. When an assistant names three businesses and you're not one of them, you never get the chance to compete.
Mentioned vs cited: what the difference means
Mentioned means the assistant named your business. Cited means it used your website as a source. Being cited is a strong sign it trusts your facts. In BrightLocal's 2026 study of 200,085 local searches, business websites made up 42% of the sources AI cited, more than Google profiles or directories.
If you're mentioned but not cited, assistants are picking you up from somewhere else, like your Google profile or a directory. If you're neither, the "cited instead" column shows who's filling the gap.
How to improve your AI visibility
- State your facts the same way everywhere: name, services, areas, hours, phone.
- Give every service its own page that answers the questions customers ask.
- Keep reviews coming, and answer them.
- Get listed on the directories and "best of" lists the assistants already cite in your area.

Questions owners ask
Is the AI visibility check free?
Yes. It's part of the free audit, along with your Google Maps grid, profile, reviews and website checks.
Which question do you ask the assistants?
We ask about your main service in your area, the way a customer would, using the same search phrase as your map check.
Why does ChatGPT give a different answer when I ask?
AI answers change with the wording, the time and sometimes the person asking. The audit asks every assistant the same way, so the results are comparable, but treat any single answer as a snapshot.
Can you make ChatGPT recommend me?
No one can promise that. What we can do is make your facts clear and consistent where assistants look, and check every month whether they mention or cite you.

Guides
- GuideHow to get your business recommended by ChatGPT and Google's AI (2026)ChatGPT and Google's AI recommend local businesses that they can find described clearly and the same way across the web: on your website, your Google Business Profile, review sites and directories. There is no special file or code that gets you picked, and Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra requirements beyond normal search. What helps is what helps customers too: consistent facts, a page for each service, plenty of real reviews, and a place on the lists and directories assistants read.
- GuideDo I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?Yes. Your Google Business Profile helps you show on the map, but your website is what ranks in the regular local results below it, what AI assistants cite most often when they recommend local businesses, and where your profile sends people who want to know more before they call. It's also the only part of your online presence you actually own.
- GuideHow to get more Google reviews (and stay within Google's rules)Ask every customer, soon after the job, with a direct link to your Google review form, and make it a routine rather than a one-time push. Don't offer anything in return and don't ask only the happy ones: Google bans both, and the FTC can seek penalties for fake reviews and for rewards tied to positive ones. How many reviews you need depends on the top 3 businesses near you, not on a fixed number.
