Your category, rating, review count and the details Google shows customers.
The businesses ahead of you
The strongest competitors at the center of your map, with their ratings, reviews and websites.
What gives them the edge

Name, address and phone
Whether your details match between your profile and your website.
Why compare your profile with competitors
Google ranks you against the other businesses near the searcher, not against a perfect score. A profile can be complete and still lose to a competitor with three times the reviews. Seeing the businesses ahead of you tells you which gap to close first.
The gaps we see most often
- A primary category that's too broad, or one that doesn't match the main service customers search for.
- Services and service areas left empty, so Google has less to match you to.
- Too few recent reviews compared with the top 3, or reviews with no replies.
- A website that doesn't back the profile up, with no page for the services the profile lists.
- Out-of-date hours that make you look closed when customers search.

Guides
- GuideGoogle Business Profile optimization checklist (2026)An optimized Google Business Profile is verified, uses your real business name and the most specific primary category, lists every service and area you actually serve, shows accurate hours, and has real photos and a steady flow of answered reviews. Google says complete, accurate information helps your profile show for relevant local searches, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Work through the checklist below field by field, then check it again every month.
- GuideWhy is my business not showing on Google Maps? 9 causes and how to fix eachIf your business doesn't show on Google Maps even when you search its exact name, the profile itself has a problem: it isn't verified yet, it's suspended, it's marked as a duplicate, or a recent edit is still under review. If it shows for your name but not for searches like "plumber near me", it's a ranking problem: the wrong primary category, a searcher who's too far away, or competitors with more reviews. The 60-second name test below tells you which one you have.
- GuideHow to get more Google reviews (and stay within Google's rules)Ask every customer, soon after the job, with a direct link to your Google review form, and make it a routine rather than a one-time push. Don't offer anything in return and don't ask only the happy ones: Google bans both, and the FTC can seek penalties for fake reviews and for rewards tied to positive ones. How many reviews you need depends on the top 3 businesses near you, not on a fixed number.
